Fluoride

Some people disapprove of adding fluoride to drinking water for a few reasons. These  reasons are that fluoride can cause health problems. As far as we know, these only happen if there is more than 1ppm of fluoride in drinking water. The first and least severe of these problems is staining of the teeth. These stains are brown but do not cause problems, besides appearance. One more health problem is skeletal fluorosis. This is a health problem in which too much fluoride accumulates around bones. This leads to changes in bone structure and makes bones weak and brittle. For more info on skeletal fluorosis click here. One final reason that some people may be opposed to adding fluoride to drinking water is because it could change the taste of the water. These are a few of the reasons that people may be opposed to adding fluoride to drinking water.

My position on adding fluoride to drinking water is that we should do it. One of my reasons for this is that my dad is a dentist and it greatly reduces tooth decay. Also, it was hard for my dad to think of disadvantages of adding fluoride to drinking water. One more reason that I am for adding fluoride to drinking water is that we haven’t had problems with the amount that we add. This tells me that all of the problems that can happen don’t at the amount that we currently add. This means that as long as we don’t increase the amount that we add, we should be fine.

The first advance that needed to be made was that a fluoride compound needed to be made with a compatible abrasive. This means that the protection of fluoride needed to be combined with something that could polish teeth. This took a while to do. This is the main advance that needed to be made.

The first side effect of fluoride in drinking water that concerns me is the staining of your teeth. The only reason that this is of concern to me is that this side effect requires the least amount of fluoride to take place. My biggest concern is skeletal fluorosis, though. This is because this is very serious. It can cause deformities and cause you bones to break very easily. Also, North American doctors are not trained to recognize it because it does not happen very often in North America. This means that by the time you get it diagnosed it could be very serious.
